EVALUATION Question 1 : GENRE CONVENTIONS

  • Explain the purpose of a film promotion package that includes a trailer,a film poster and film magazine cover. Who is your target audience and what is the whole package designed to achieve?
Our package consisting of a Trailer, Magazine Cover and Film Poster is designed to generate interest and curiosity as to why such events occur throughout the whole trailer as well as the cliff hanger. We are aiming our film towards a target audience of both genders aged 15-35 but predominantly the attraction of youth. This wouldn't appeal to older generations because of the modern touch to the political issue we are conveying however it might be appealing to some depending on their taste of genre. Specifically we are aiming for adolescents who are likely to see films such as 71', Dunkirk and Geostorm in cinema - a mix between Survival, Disaster and Politics.
  • Identify the genre conventions: a theatrical trailer for most films is between 2 and 2.5 minutes.
Our trailer lasts just over 2 minutes - This is because we wanted to provoke curiosity for the audience as this will grasp their direct attention and make them want to find out the result of the occurring events. Also, it isn't too long which would usually lose the viewer's attention.
  • What is your film's USP?
Our Unique Selling Point is the threatening situation the teenagers are put in by the UK's Government and North Korea. The possible outcome of the United Kingdom's population being wiped out is the gripping sensation we hope our audiences receive.
  • Production company ident?
Our film trailer is an Impact Production Film but our Ident is for Metropolitan Films (our other company) which is the flashing police lights and siren with the title fading in.
  • Identify the film's genre and start to compose notes about how the film's genre is signalled through visual codes such as narrative (=character & events); privileging the protagonistslightingmise-en-scene;
The mise-en-scene is well presented to give the full effect of disaster which is done by positioning our establishing shots where no other person is around apart from the actors within that scene. We have also picked very non-malicious places to film our scenes in as this contrasts well with the act from North Korea. For 2 of our scenes (the plane conversation and interview) we have used a Green Screen to portray a real life setting which we could have done with a budget and more time - this still gives a real effect to these scenes. We have successfully used fast and hard cuts, including intertitles, to create and maintain a sense of urgency and potential threat.
  • ...and through sound codes (minimal dialogue / enhanced diegetic sounds, musical soundtrack, spot sounds, leit motifs)
Through editing, we were able to input a voice-over over some clips to further show the genre of the film and to help viewer's understand what the teenagers are facing during this dangerous period. The soundtrack we used is controversial to the film genre and professional film trailers however it contrasts well as it could relate to the film's outcome.
  • ... and through camerawork and framing (restricting the frame, over the shoulder shots, reaction shots, point of view shots, tracking shot, arc pan?) Stress the variety of shots.
During the trailer, we use many shots including establishing, tracking, panning, POV, handheld and more. We used a handheld camera angle and shot as it exaggerates the feeling of urgency as they are on their way to the bunker as fast as they can. We also used a tracking shot during the action as this followed the facial and body expressions of the actors. This was because we were focusing only on the protagonists throughout the whole trailer. As we had access to footage from a plane flying over London, we were able to capture an Aerial view of London for our Green Screen scene on the plane.
  • ...and through editing (rapid pace, hard /straight cuts, sound and vision editing, motivated edit), ellipsis
Our editing during and post-production was successful as we wanted to create fast cuts to emphasize. Also, we changed the starting scenes from color to black and white which allowed the audience to understand that we are portraying the past where every day life was normal when growing up. We filmed in the bright parts of day, and then dusk to show the long journey they are had to embark on.

This film trailer is a creation of enigma as the audience don't know how the protagonists are going to handle the dilemmas they meet throughout the on going event.
  •  Comment on institutional genre conventions such as the title and when it appears, inter-titles, release date ('coming soon', in cinemas June 2017), puffs, awards, social media, film website.
The institutional conventions that have been used in my production are textual intertitles, which shows the release date and film title. There are also intertitles which break up the scenes which aid build up the tension. They also create sentences when put together which adds curiosity and interest for the viewers.

The strength of my production is that I have successfully built up tension and interest through the pace of the editing and use of soundtrack.
